Primitive Stone Axe

In this video I demonstrate how to make a stone age axe. I believe it worked efficiently but it did end up splitting due to the shape of the stone itself. If it were more rounded and polished stone it may have not split the hard green cedar I used. Every time we try to recreate tools and weapons from the stone age it is a great learning experience. Thank you for watching.

glad to see you get the tree down with the ax.

very cool! i love to see the work done with stone tools! maybe a strip of bark or cordage could be wrapped around the blade, and the shaft under and over to help prevent splitting and keep the blade in place. thanks for posting!

From what I understand the rock shouldn't touch the sides of the axe handle. Only the top and bottom, which should be rounded off, because the rock will force the two sides apart

Nice. I may want to attempt this. Any ideas on how to keep the handle from spliting?

it works, just split on the end
perhaps make rope around the woodl as reinforcement around the wood

what if you try using oak or something similar, tree instead of cedar ?

the reason it split is the exact opposite the fat part should not touch the sides or it will act as a spliting wedge. the top and bottom should be the part of the handle holding the stone.
