I mean mixing and mastering is definitely a complex artform, but he’s right for the most part. If you want it to be louder just turn stuff down. Fancy plugins are to change the characteristics of the drum samples. It all starts out with sound selection

Beware. If you just turn your drums up and throw a soft clipper on everything your overall volume will be lower. Not only that but the more you crank it to get your master louder the more you are squashing and killing your transients.

There are compression techniques, transient designers, saturation, soft clipping on the drum bus, etc. Don't just slap something on the end and turn it up
