This was a very real issue faced by Japanese Christians during the first half of the last century. Some would say, and I agree with them, that it's still an issue that some Christians there face in certain contexts. Side note: you might find it interesting that one of the few groups besides Christians that opposes this is the Communist party. So sad to see this is even a thing in the US today. One other thing: in that era the Japanese gov't, especially the Ministry of Education, framed the issue as one of patriotism instead of religious worship. I don't think it would be far-fetched to think that certain groups in the US would try the same tactic. And the conflation of patriotism with nationalism is also something that happened then which I am saddened to see happening in the US today.

You are absolutely right Miss Stevens, while this is the best country in the world, and I hang the flag proudly on my property, this is taking it a bit too far, one thing is to be proud of your country and another thing is to worship your country

They are lost. The Lord has closed their ears and made them blind. I figured they were so into scripture that they would have picked up on the whole God allowing a great deception, even unto the elect will be deceived. The founding fathers knew, understood intimately, that dragging God into the politics of men causes God to pretty much abandon those people. These fools are doing just that.
