Hey Matt, I've been using hand tools. Scrapers, chisels, hand planes, for a about 4 years. And I have a couple quick tips.
One, you don't have to charge your strop every time you use it. Just here and there.
Two, when you cut into your strop, fold back the flap where you cut it. And put a little drop of med, or thick, CA glue (Cyanoacrylate) and then fold the flap down and hold it with a flat screw driver. Or something other than your finger. Incase there's a little more glue then you need. That way you don't glue yourself to your strop. Lol
Thanks for another great one.

Hi Matt. Thanks so much for this video. I just bought this system from Mike. BTW - Tay Tools is great to work with. I'll be buying many things from them I'm sure!!

The “micro bevel” isn’t about making it sharper or cut better, typically lower angles are better cutters; the point of the micro bevel is to make sharpening faster as you only have to sharpen a narrow zone rather than having to take the steal down across the whole width. I sharpen my chisels on diamond stones, just 2 grits either 400/1000 or 600/1200 I don’t recall which and a strop; I also run a diamond paste on the strop with a courser formula on the rough side and a smooth formula on the fine side of the leather. Stropping throughout your cutting will save on sharpening times, at least in my experience.
I run 3 sets of chisels and sharpen them towards their use as I’m not going to waste too much time sharpening a chisel that will only see use in cleaning up rough work. I also like a 20 degree chisel grind for some jobs as it leaves a surface planer smooth.

One of the first hand tools I learned to use. My dad was that “guy”. He was also a jerk and expected you to know how to do things. One of the times I saw my mom light him up was when he was laughing at a doghouse I had built. I found a bunch of old scraps and hammered them together. My dad started laughing and picking on me and my mom come flying out of the house and lit him up, one thing she said was why didn’t dog have a house to start with. Not understanding that at the time but I’d say now, he didn’t get no sugar that night. He’s gone now and I still make things so it all worked out in the end.

I just inherited a workshop of tools! Everything you can think of and more. 4 generations. There are tools I have never seen or heard about but I can’t wait to sharpen the box full of chisels. There are a couple planers too but two are missing the screw that holds them together. There was also a tin can that opened both ends with “clover compound” in it. It’s for honing, polishing, grinding, lapping, sharpening and cleaning and comes in two grits. I hope it’s still good because it cleans things up like a charm!

Thanks for another awesome video Matt! I’ve been trying to restore a bench plane without much success, but I just ordered this kit to get my plane iron back in usable condition. Keep up the good work and God speed brother *virtual first bump*

I've got the same sharpening system and Narex chisels and they are both great! The scary sharp system works great on plane blades as well. Keep up the great work, Matt!

Great video, as always.
Overall I like the system you use, mainly because it works for you and it appears to work well.
It is easy to forget that that is what matters.
You "should" only sharpen on the pull stroke, but it dont really matter all that much.

My dad was a 7 year apprentice trained surgical instrument maker, and trust me he really did know how to sharpen edge tools! He could get a decent edge on a kitchen knife just by pullin it across a quarry tile!

Chisels and hand planners/block planners... That's what any woodworker SHOULD have in their shop.
