What are the best microphones for YouTube? In this video, I explain the five best mics (one per category) and help you to decide which is the best for you to buy.

The 5 Microphones for YouTubers
1. Blue Yeti mic ($120)
Good for screen recording, ASMR, podcast, boom mic, simple music recording, or just a general stationary studio
3 capsules
2. Rode VideoMic shotgun mic ($80)
Simple setup for vlogging, traveling, walking around, or even in a studio - this is great for simple editing
May need to de-ess in premiere
3. Zoom Handy series ($120)
Great for interviews or other situations where you hold the microphone. This can also act as a mobile version of the Blue Yeti
This is also an excellent recorder if you choose to use a lav mic
4. Sony or Power DeWise lavalier mic ($20)
Excellent audio, close to the body, great for studio videos in which you move around, interviews, or other videos where you are too far away for a shotgun mic to work well
You will need a recorder of some sort - can use the onboard camera audio jack, or else a phone (if you have the right adapter)
5. Onboard phone mic
Dependent on the phone you use - this is the first step for a budget setup

The simple fact that you used each one during the review helped me a lot. Thank you for taking the time.

I like how you used each one as you talked about it. That really helped me hear how they all work. Thanks!

Oh my god, so for the past five years I've been recording from the part of the mic with the logo facing toward me, and I realised that the logo has to face the other way. I tested it out and my audio has way less background noise. Idk how I didn't figure this out.

Since you seem to put your heart and soul into this work, and I am getting value from it, I have subscribed.

Thanks so much for the reviews your content is always top notch!

Question: If you use the lavelier mic plugged into the zoom h1n can you record with both mic's at the same time?

Many thanks, Stuart

Thanks for the comprehensive coverage. I have the Power DeWise lavalier mic, and it is a great little mic. It does pick up a lot of ambient sound, other than the speaker wearing it. However, the sound quality seems to me to be much better than with just a smartphone, despite the phone's quality. These are all reasonable microphones for getting quality audio that doesn't break the bank.

When you use the Blue Yeti microphone do you plug it directly into your DSLR or into your laptop or desktop computer and then sync the audio and video in post-production? Thank you very much, your video was very insightful and informative. Cheers :-)

blue yeti sounds good through my headphones when I edit, but when I watch my video's on YouTube later I don't like the sound at all. Doesn't sound any different than the cheaper one I pin to my shirt. :(

I record on a smartphone. What would you recommend?

I am going to start with the Power Dewise Lavalier mic with extension cord on Amazon. Thank you for excellent review video. I am teaching classes online & probably use a dry erase board during the courses. I will upgrade mic later once I have a "following" but for right now, I am starting with a conservative investment. Next phase of learning you tube videos is EDITING & adding text over video (like in television).

Thanks a lot. Blue Yeti or something like that for me, as I probably will only do audio.

I like how in the beginning said if you have good content buying a microphone would be ideal which because not everybody can be a youtuber

Just some advice, if you have a few extra bucks, skip the zoom h1 and go right for the H5 or H6. Once you start building up some gear, you will need those extra inputs.

So I’m making sure I understand. Use the zoom recorder at the same time you are making video, then sync it up during editing? I’m new, if ya can’t tell 🤷🏼‍♂️
