Hello, world!

Welcome to Geek Out of Water! My name is Shelly, and I started this channel to help fill the void in the genre of 40-something beauty bloggers. I'm a 41-year-old web programming nerd with changing skin and changing needs, learning to navigate the beauty world. I'll be sharing tips, tricks, and finds as I research beauty products to find the ones that work the best on skin that's starting to show those smile lines and sun spots and sins of years past. Extra cheers to my fellow fair complected and dry skinned fishes!

Show some love with a thumbs up and subscribe for weekly videos. Thanks!

Sounds like you are a lot like me! Totally a flannel, rock shirt, no makeup wearing girl. I didn't even start wearing makeup until my 30s. I'm 48 now, but the last 2 years, I've been trying to get into more "self care". I'm so glad I found you!

Hello, Shelly! World here. I am now going back and binge watching your channel from the beginning. I am particularly intrigued to see how all your hair looks change over the 2 years you've been YouTubing.

SHELLY!!! Just watched your first video while talking to a friend who like yourself 2 years ago, found herself increasingly concerned about her 40+ skin and how she may go about remedying that. I introduced her to your channel and she is very excited. I can't remember when I first started watching you but I see you now have 6000 subscribers!! doing great Shelly!! your still my favorite:)

So, i just found your channel a few weeks ago, and i subscribed, but then I wanted to know more about you and decided i would scroll all the way down to your first video, and I'm so glad i did. I love your channel and the fact that you are real, not like alot off these influencers out here, or i really should say I relate with you more! ❤️❤️

I went back to find your first post to see your evolution. I have a similar makeup/skincare story. I just got into taking better care of my face in the last couple years. I’m 45 now. I miss the days of going barefaced and looking perfectly fine. I also have similar dryness. So glad to have found you, Shelly! ~Diane

went back to watch your intro, as it has been recently that I found you. I am 40 with very dry skin, too, so I appreciate your information!

I had to come and check this out from the 10K celebration video. You've always rocked! Same experience with clothes, makeup here. I am so glad you chose to share this journey with the rest of us.

Hi! I'm so glad I found your channel! I'm 59 (yikes!) and also have very dry skin. I have been on the hunt for a good foundation since my holy grail (clarins extra comfort) got discontinued. I haven't found a good under eye concealer that doesn't enhance my lines. I'm going to try to watch as manyof your videos as I can lol :-)

Shelly, add 23 years on and you have described my life in fashion and beauty so you now have a new Canadian subscriber. Until the internet opened up the world of plus sized clothing, most of the options available to those of us north of the border were very limited so take your shopping woes and multiply them considerably. And I specialize in dry skin dealing with our winters - let me know what moisturizers work well without making the makeup slide off of my face, will you? And have you tried Lancome Efficernes concealer?

Ha! This came up in my recommendations! We're a lot alike .. I didn't get interested in make-up until I was 45! I wore mascara before and eye make-up to weddings and funerals ... but never foundation, highlighter, blush, concealer, corrector etc. lol

Hey girl, so ironically, I did the same as the last “newest” comment. I found you when I searched for fiera cosmetics reviews and clicked on you, then poked around your channel. I love scrolling to a YouTubers 1 posted video, probably because I’m planning on starting a channel as well, (a DIY crafting one), so I look to see what info I can gather, do’s and donts kinda stuff. I like your channel because like the other person who commented, you’re down to earth and keep it real. So, I’m not a plus size gal, (but slowly getting there). I’ve just gone thru a divorce from a toxic controlling person that I was married to for over 20 years. I am about to turn…I can’t even say it..60! I’ve always looked 10 years younger being Italian but this marriage robbed me of so much. I NEED to learn now, self care and definitely the art of skin care and especially make up application. I have a 22 year old son whose on the spectrum, 3 cats and a fish, and a home he left destroyed so that getting on with our life would be a struggle, ( ah the joys of living with an alcoholic). I’m hoping to learn how to apply makeup, and utilize skincare. I know we are 20 years apart, but any skincare you’re using at 40 something is better than what I’m using which is nothing. If you could point me towards some videos you have for newbies trying skincare and especially cosmetic application, that would be great. If you don’t have newbie cosmetic application videos, maybe you could make one? There are a lot of woman out here trying to reclaim THEIR lives and feel good while doing it. Thanks for letting me take up your comment section, (didn’t really have a choice now did you😊), and btw, love all the colors you’ve used in your hair, I’m the same. I have to be careful tho as all the stress has caused fallout and thinning of my thick Italian hair. Good luck and much success as you continue on this vast platform, continue to keep it real girl, that’s my elder advice! I hope to be sharing YouTube space with you soon! Love from the S W part of the US, a former NYer. 💕
