Black Racers Hatch in October

Today(October 20, 2018) a clutch of Black Racers hatched. We grabbed a big female in August for some research. After a few days in the lab she laid eggs. I took the eggs to the mothers capture site and put them in the rotten pulp inside a palm log (the favorite nest site of central Florida racers) and then checked them every several days. Baby racers appear every year in July, indicating racers typically lay early in the summer. I suspect this clutch was the females second for the year. Double clutching is really rare in North American snakes so maybe she was just slow to reproduce this year.

Very cool, you seem to know what you're doing too, those little snakes couldnt have asked for a better incubator. Love the one in the center that's in blue. I'm perhaps futilely raising a newborn wild caught one. I have my doubts it'll tame down and if it doesn't I'll release it where I found it
