Google has made a flurry of AI-related announcements, including that Gemini-infused web search will be rolling out as a default for all users of Google Search. Google is also offering to pay the DoJ triple the maximum potential damages to settle their upcoming antitrust trial.

I was fixing my cars AC yesterday. The AI results were mostly unhelpful, irrelevant, and expensive or complicated to even check so i quickly started ignoring it. The fix and test was to swap the AC's relay with the horn relay, if it works the AC relay needs replaced. This was the first thing someone suggested doing in a forum for my exact issue. The AI never mentioned anything about a relay or how to troubleshoot it. Normal people not in the loop about generative AI and its flaws are going to be led astray and frustrated

i'm curious how insanely high google's power usage will be with integration LLMs into search. LLMs are soooo energy intensive, having billions of people using one is gonna be crazy

Notice how Google search dropped off a cliff for the past years, and now it's so much easier to make their new "AI enhanced" search look good so people trust it and enjoy using it, hereby associating satisfaction with Google AI products and seeing it as a solution rather than an unwanted feature.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, but that roll of tinfoil in my kitchen drawer is looking more and more enticing each day

Oh I experienced it already. Was looking for a lunchbox and searching on google on mobile felt like I was scrolling through the fucking shopping section but I hadn't even selected 'shopping'. Horrible.

All the best stuff with computers and the internet comes from new players (google was great until they got really big) but LLMs can only be made by big players - so does that mean AI will always be rubbish?

Google AI result is at the top, it's usually irrelevant and wrong. I ignore it with as much disdain I have for the sponsored results. It's trash.

Google is making search worse and worse, the top part of search is now covered in ai that gives me the wrong answer 80% of the time and advertisements. I now have to scroll 4-6 times to find a link that has the info I want. Google sucks.

Thanks for adding more crap no one needed. I'm still waiting for rollout of assistant that can book appointment on my behalf with human over voice call. Ah, right, its only available in US and UK. 6 years after the original announcement.

I tried to search how much HP characters in Soulcalibur have. Naturally, Google gave me an AI-generated result, that happened to be completely incorrect.

(It said 200, it's actually 240)
