A viewer recently asked me about system trays. How do you get a system tray on a desktop and/or panel that does not include one out-of-the-box. Today, I'm going to share with you guys a neat little program called trayer.

Great application! I had working in my Ubuntu 18.04 in few minutes with `trayer --edge bottom --align right --distancefrom right --transparent true --padding 25 --iconspacing 10 --alpha 230 `

There are cases when the network is down, or dropbox faces some problems syncing or the sound is off for some reason. This is why you can have a sys tray (or a status bar).

This is at least one of the most informative channels about Linux, god bless you, DT

okay, 60% of the video is DistroTube telling how he doesn't need a trayer, and the rest is about his configs! Congrats, i haven't learn anything about how to configure and use one!

I like how you open minds and subvert assumptions about how to use your computer. I personally use a 2 in 1 touch/stylus device with a tiler(I know, what a nonsense, right?). I would say that I still need a tray to switch between bluetooth devices, wifi-connections, volume and brightness controls... but even on a touch device I can hide all that tray stuff and use gestures to reveal certain control options...I think I am gonna explore that... I think I am reinventing android that way though...

everyone gangsta about systray untill the laptop shuts down due to inability to notice the battery level

I like having a systray for things like Discord, f.lux, caffeine, notification center. Battery status if on laptop.
Could be because I use Windows on my main desktop, but it this is essential to me.

Nice one dt. I use stalonetray in any wm without a systray inbuilt. And why? For one reason only (drumroll): To place volumeicon ;)

This is great, because I've tried to get system tray icons to appear on my Polybar but just couldn't figure it out.

It is kind of the same thing with keyboards and using layers. You do not need to have/see individual keys if you can have them on a sepatate layer. It is efficent and saves on space. Goes hand in hand with how to use your UI.

really cool, trying with dwm, but de systray patch doesn't work well. This is a great alternative.
Thanks 👊

Make a video about using using wordgrinner which is a terminal based word processor that gets the job done and gets out of the way.

You could use a system tray or panel hidden and show it when you need it only.

Can someone please explain how to use this thing? I've read the man page and it didn't help and I also can't find any documentation on arch or any video or blog tutorials. I'm completely lost on how to use trayer. Where do I get the icons? How do I get the icons to show up on xmobar? etc. I don't understand at all. Please help

How did you make your top bar to look like that(display mem info, CPU load...). Do you use tiling windows manager for that?

This doesn't work well for me. I have a single monitor setup where I have a couple of system info scripts and a clock running on xmobar. The problem is these values fluctuate sometimes and the tray ends up clipping the text. I don't place it to the extreme right because then I have to force fully reserve space for the bar in my xmobar, which kinda looks odd. It would've been great if something was integratable into xmobar.
Not really a deal breaker though, just a convenience, I'm anyways living without a tray for now like you said.
