If you’re struggling with coordination and improvisation and you don’t know where to turn…this lesson is most definitely for you.
If you practice everything we discuss in this lesson, your coordination will improve a TON! I’ve seen it in so many of my students and in my own personal practice.
Here’s how this works:
We’re taking a simple rhythm from the popular method book “Syncopation” by Ted Reed, and we’re seeing how many ways we can play it on the drumset. You could probably create a near-infinite number of these variations, so we’re just going to create 5 versions in three popular drumming styles that you can take to your practice room today to greatly push your 4-way coordination.
This method is powerful, and it’s super practical and actionable. So let’s get going! Watch the video, then head to your practice room.

NDG Blog post about “What a 10 minute gong solo teaches us about drumming.” Pretty cool stuff!

This man’s limbs are so independent they have already moved out of home and raising their own families.

I've been using "Syncopation" to teach myself how to read notation and generally improve as a drummer so it's great to get some new ways to use it. Anyone who doesn't currently have this book, buy it. Even just playing the exercises hand to hand on the snare and keeping the 4 on the floor pulse has helped my timing, coordination and stick control immensely.

Syncopation was my first drum book. That was over thirty years ago and I still go to it. Glad to hear someone recommending it. Nice work.

I think this is one of the best lessons. It made me realise how much I haven’t being doing well, independence, counting correctly and using a metronome properly it’s been a struggle but I’m almost there!

Where were you 55 years ago??? So many songs I wanted to play, but couldn't get the hands to co-operate. Thanks for sharing your info so well ... we all appreciate the effort.

Stephen, i have watched this video a 100 times already, it's super helpful, it's still frustrating as it's work, but I'm sticking to it and I feel sometimes first thing in the morning (with coffee) that it just happens, like it loosens up physically and brain wise .
Thanks a lot

Good video. I'm just learning and this is a great way to help coordination. I've only been playing about a month but I make sure to practice rudiments daily. Another trick to help practice is I will make sure every exercise I do, I repeat it twice as long with my weak hand/foot. So if I'm right handing the high-hat, and left handing the snare, the next go-around I'll swap hands. I'll do the same with my feet. Playing the base with my right foot, then the next go with my left (double bass peddle). It's helped a ton to make sure both hands and feet stay equal in abilities. Thanks for the upload.

It's amazing how you can take a simple pattern, and with a few tweaks, get something really cool. Thanks!!
