The oracle of Apollo at Delphi was the most famous of the Greek oracles. She gave many prophecies to rulers who consulted her (example: Alexander the Great). As Christianity took hold over the Roman empire, the oracles gradually fell silent and the ancient gods ceased to speak to men. The story goes that in 362, on behalf of his emperor Julian the Apostate, Oribasius visited the Delphic oracle and received the following prophecy.

The emperor at this time (based on the time given) was Julian the Apostate, Rome's last pagan emperor. The Daidalic Hall falling meant that paganism's time was up. Phoebus not having his chamber, mantic laurel and spring was because pagan temples fell into disuse, as people had largely ceased to worship the Roman gods. Years after Julian the Apostate was slain, Theodosius I made Christianity Rome's official new religion, and paganism was effectively banned.

I never thought about the last prophecy. Something about that is heartbreaking, especially her expression. The painting is beautiful

“…prophetic spring and the speaking water has been silenced” gave me chills. Water scrying.

Oracles started to lose importance much earlier though. Their zenith was reached during the Classical Greece period (V-IV century BCE). Christianity put the nail on the coffin but since the first century BCE they had become turistic attractions for Romans, like Sparta.

The translation isn't accurate enough to make sense and rhyme.
The original message was: ἔπατε τῷ βασιλε̃ι· χαμαὶ πέσε δαίδαλος αὐλά.
I understand and speak ancient Greek so here's the translation:

" Tell the king that the magnificent hall has fallen. Phoebus no longer has his house nor the prophesying laurel nor the speaking well. The water which speaks has dried out, too."

Your content makes me think beyond myself. History is a slap in the face with reality. Thank you for that

Modern historians have uncovered that the so called Last Prophesy of the Pythia is not actually historically true. It was created a few centuries after the death of Emperor Julian by a Byzantine chronographer to mock the remaining followers of Hellenism. However, it has created a paradox. Should the last prophesy be true, it means that all the others were true too. If, on the other hand, the prophesy is wrong, then Apollo has not forsaken his sanctuary.

I’ve been to Delphi. It’s incredible, if you ever go it’s harrowing to walk the same stairs that figures like Alexander the Great, his father and the Roman emperor Nero walked on. The word Ancient doesn’t do it justice.

The oracle of Delphi always scared me 😂😂😂 cause of Percy Jackson.

There was theory that gases is seeping from the earth and that's what cause the visions and that after an earthquake, there were less prophesies, probably the supply got cut off.

Imagine watching thousands of years of history and tradition fall right before your eyes. Not to just know things are going to shit, but to actually physically watch it happen because you have visions must’ve been insane. Like watching from above as the world burns before entering the next world.
