Eternal Source Of Light Divine (aus: Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne, HWV 74)

Eternal source of light divine
With double warmth thy beams display
And with distinguish'd glory shine
To add a lustre to this day.

Ewiger Quell göttlichen Lichts
Sende deine Strahlen aus mit doppelter Wärme
Und scheine mit prangender Herrlichkeit,
um diesem Tag Glanz zu verleihen.

Handel’s music is for the ages. Magnificent voice, and a fine performance on the valveless trumpet.

I listen to this incredible music with the memory of young Sophy Scholl in my thoughts, who at 21 was arrested by the Gestapo in February 1943 at Munich University, that later resulted in her brutal execution by guillotine by the Nazis for her peaceful action resisting Hitler’s regime. It was reported that in the last moments of her life she looked up to the skies and said “It is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go.” This was her realisation that she was never more to ‘feel the heat of the Sun’. Although her life was cut so tragically short, her immense courage and determined self-belief in what was right for the people of Germany, lived on just as the Eternal source of light Devine. Sophie Magdalena Scholl was born on 9th May 1922 and died a hero. A version of the text of the White Rose that led to Sophie’s arrest was later smuggled out of Germany, copied by the RAF and redistributed from the air by British planes flying over German cities as Allied propaganda that contributed to the inevitable defeat and fall of Nazi Germany. Incidentally Sophie loved the music of Bach and Handel and undoubtedly would have appreciated his wonderful melody. May Sophie’s memory continue on ‘with distinguished glory shine. To add lustre to this day’.

I've spent months listening to other versions of this: somehow this one eluded me. The purity of tone of the soprano, the incredible "technical brilliance" of the valveless accompanist: the ensemble working together seamlessly - this is the best. Wow!!!
4 months later I have realised just why this is so good. Listen to the “attack” at 1:10mins – she doesn’t slide up to the note like everyone else – she hits it immediately. Her technique is magnificent. Every note is hit without the usual creep up to it from a safe note. Also, there are no false aspirates (when a singer sounds like a woodpecker by re-aspirating each new note instead of just running across it – e.g. what makes Maria Callas better than Cecilia Bartoli).

Point of Praise:
This is a period trumpet - no valves. What an uncommonly good performance. GJS

If life offered just one moment of happiness, then this music would be heard in it.

He's in a league of his own imo, because nobody writes a more majestic cadence than Handel.
