Coherers were used in the first wireless spark-gap telegraph systems. What you're seeing here is effectively a recreation of that effect and technology. kinda neat! The reason the technology was abandoned wasn't just that transmitting audio wirelessly was a more advanced and overall more useful tech... Spark-gaps caused massive interference with audio transmission, and so they were retired by regulation to make way for audio broadcasts.

It was likely the lighters ignition system, not the flame!
The small discharge likely displaced just enough electrons in the “switch” to make it conductive enough to allow the charges to flow in the low-voltage circuit.
