Engine Ball Honing Explained #shorts

Показать описание
Inserting a string of balls into a cylinder and grinding its inner walls at high speed is a technique called the ball honing process. Although it may seem like the grinding leaves scratches on the surface, that’s intentional. But why do we need engine honing?, These scratches form a cross-hatched pattern, which helps retain lubricant when the piston operates inside the cylinder, enhancing surface lubrication. As long as the scratches aren’t too deep, they actually extend the cylinder’s lifespan.

Your mother is EXCELLENT at ball honing btw.

Slow that home down if you want proper crosshatch. It’s a common mistake but it makes a BIG difference. 60 degrees of crosshatch is what you need.

They used to call that a dingleberry hone😂

Is done mainly to increase the seal of the piston rings to the cylinder wall, which increases compression by reducing blowby thus increasing power; enhancing lubrication is not its principal purpose.

I had to go into the comments as soon as I got past the first few seconds of this just to make sure I wasn't the only one thinking the way I was thinking. I'm glad I did, because I found my people.

Everyone that knows why this is done is screaming at their phone right now

Honing in general is more then cross hatching its to get the ID to spec, press fitting sleeve and bushing shrinks the ID and to get it in spec you need to hone in afterwards

I would bore the cylinders for my road racing, motorcycle the same size as the flare on the piston skirt, then I would, hone The cylinders this way till I had 1.5000s clearance.. then I would scratch in the rings and new piston by putting one drop of oil on the piston skirt, and spinning the crankshaft at about 60 RPM for a couple minutes to break the rings in. Then I would assemble the engine., start the engine and let it idle, blipping the throttle occasionally for rod stretch, so I would not get a ridge at the top of the cylinder. I would let the engine run for about five minutes, then let it cool down occasionally turning the engine over till the Pistons conform to the exact shape of the cylinder slowly. After several heat cycles of this, The pistons rings and cylinder were ready to go into duty on the race track. I learned this Breakin routine from a Kawasaki road racing motorcycle handbook. It worked because I won six Road racing championships, two time national champion Breaking my engines in this way..
this was on my yamaha rd 2stroke air cooled engines

It's actually the Lubricant that extends the life with the help of this process. You could use other abrasive to achieve the same result. It is very important ...

Ball hones weren't allowed in all the shops I worked at up until my retirement. They do nothing to address an out of round bore.

The oil burns in the piston because the oil rings could not scrape it off smoothly. The crosshatch honing last 500 miles. The real reason for the honing so that this all ring and the cylindarl wall will seat perfectly.

Crazy how many people in these comments have no clue what they're talking about, yet still spout their misinformation with such confidence

Counterintuitive honing seems, but its important.

what a lot of people get the misconception is that is a ball hone is just to add new crosshatching to a lightly worn cylinder a lot of times if you have scoring or really bad scuffing the cylinder needs to be bored and then honed.

Honing in this way can cause the cylinder to get out of round and the rings won't seal properly. The block must be aligned and rigidly mounted in a honing machine to ensure the cylinder isn't damaged.

I'm sorry, but listening to this out of context is crazy 😂😂

I have not heard that term since I was an apprentice almost 25 years ago. Even then my mentor thought it was the funniest fckin thing to say.

Ball hone doesn't GRIND anything, it scratches.
