Mammie was indeed the moral compass of the story.  She saw them all for who and what they were.  And Miss Hattie McDaniel playing the part was pure gold.

You know Hattie McDaniel was so good in the role of Mammy that even when racism was so rampant and considered acceptable that they couldn’t deny her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Mammy understood Scarlett better than anybody and certainly was more of a real mother to her than her biological mother. It's so interesting in the book how Scarlett always idolizes her mom but she never really knew her but Scarlett and Mammy were the two who were actually close.

Hattie McDaniel richly deserved that Oscar she won. The movie wouldn’t have been the same without her playing Mammy. I just love the way she takes charge. She’s a force to be reckoned with. And funny too.

Mammy- one of the strongest characters in the whole movie. She tells off Rhett, and he backs down. Not because she's a woman, but because he respects her and I believe he may have though she could take him in a fight. Her courage and faith were unwavering.
