Irvin D. Yalom’s 45-year career started in medicine – and then progressed to psychiatry, psychology, philosophy, and the way these related fields all provide insight into the practice of therapy. His textbooks on psychotherapy are part of the curriculum at Stanford and numerous other schools. He has released several best sellers, including The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, When Nietzsche Wept, and Love's Executioner.

Irvin D. Yalom is a renowned American psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and author who has made significant contributions to the field of psychotherapy. He was born on June 13, 1931, in Washington, DC, and grew up in a poor Jewish family.

Yalom graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1956 and completed his residency training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1960. He went on to earn a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in 1962.

In addition to his work as a clinician, Yalom has written extensively on the theory and practice of psychotherapy. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages and have won numerous awards, including the Commonwealth Club gold medal for nonfiction and the American Psychiatric Association's top literary prize.

Yalom is best known for his work on existential psychotherapy, which focuses on helping patients confront the fundamental issues of human existence, such as death, isolation, and meaninglessness. His approach is highly regarded by many practitioners in the field, and his textbooks on psychotherapy are widely used in training programs around the world.

In addition to his work as a clinician and author, Yalom has also served as a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University for more than thirty years. He has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field, including the American Psychiatric Association's Oskar Pfister Award and the Society for Psychotherapy and Research's Distinguished Psychotherapist Award.
