Van Vihar National Park and Zoo is one of the most revered National Park and Zoo of Central India and is a shining beacon in the field of conservation. It is an amazing world of winged creatures, free ranging ungulates and captive carnivores in the midst of greenery.
The park which is more popularly known as just “Van Vihar” is considered as a “must see” destination for tourists visiting Bhopal. The characteristic combination of rich wetland areas, meadows, pools of water at different places, rugged slopes, mixed bamboo vegetation along with grass covered plateau and areas of mixed plantations support the rich floral and faunal diversity in the area.
This green oasis amidst the city of lakes also plays a very vital role as a carbon sink contributing to environmental health of Bhopal. It is situated right next to the famous Upper Lake of Bhopal also known as the “Bada Talab” which is a Ramsar Site and one of the two lakes of Bhoj Wetland. One of it’s kind establishment being a combination of National Park, a Zoo, Rescue Centre for wild animals and Conservation Breeding Centre for selected vital species.
Bhopal: Famous male tiger of Van Vihar - Panna, died at the age of 14 years in the national park in the wee hours of Thursday. Tiger Panna was one of the main attractions for the visitors coming to Van Vihar.
Assistant director, Van Vihar, Sunil Sinha said that the male tiger Panna was brought to Van Vihar on March 28, 2014 from Kanha Tiger Reserve when it was 4-years-old. At present, it was 14-years-old.
The officials spotted it lying dead in its enclosure in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Its post-mortem was conducted by senior wildlife doctors and the visceral samples of internal organs were sent to School of WildLife Forensic and Health Jabalpur for further investigations to ascertain the actual cause of death. It was then cremated in the park in the presence of officials.
Sinha said that after Panna’s death, now 17 tigers are left at the Van Vihar National Park.
