Hi, I’m Ali Sealander with UTD Geonews and I’m here to tell you about a temblor that tickled Texas recently. A little after 10 in the morning on March 26, a moderate earthquake struck far West Texas, about 25 miles west of the small town of Mentone . No serious damage was done, partly because it was a moderate earthquake , magnitude 5, and partly because the earthquake happened in the sparsely populated Chihuahuan desert . Only 19 people live in Mentone, the only community in Loving County, Texas. Few people live in this region because it is a desert. People in El Paso TX, 175 miles away, said it felt like a large train was passing nearby. Even though this was a pretty modest earthquake as earthquakes go, it was one of the strongest earthquakes that Texas has experienced in the past 150 years . The earthquake occurred in a region of low seismic risk compared to regions to the west and in Oklahoma and in the central Mississippi River valley to the NE.

We hope you enjoyed this GeoNews video. Until next time, stay safe!

Interesting stuff. The NS slip on an EW-striking fault seems consistent with Shmax orientations for that area shown by Snee and Zoback (2018).

I personally think that it was caused by a mix of natural and induced pressure. There are a lot of oils pumping operations there. It might have not been the main cause, but i definitely think it could have been a factor.

Earthquakes have been occurring in this area regularly (every 2-3 days) for months, though not of this magnitude. Today's was a 2.5.
2023 Update: quakes are daily, sometimes over 20 per day usually ranging from 2's to 3's, occasional 4. Most are small enough to not be felt by a person, but what are the cumulative effects of so many low-level quakes as compared to one larger one that makes the news?
