If Only it Didn't Have a Tendency to Explode #appendix

“It’s From When We Ate Grass” #appendix. The gut microbiome, consisting of trillions of microorganisms, plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being. However, the delicate balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut can be disrupted by various factors, including gut insults such as infections, antibiotic use, poor diet, and stress. These insults can wipe out the good bacteria and create an environment that is conducive to the growth of harmful bacteria, leading to dysbiosis, inflammation, and susceptibility to disease. In this context, the appendix, a small pouch-like organ located at the junction of the small and large intestines, has emerged as a potential sanctuary for beneficial bacteria. While the appendix was once thought to be a vestigial organ with no apparent function, recent research suggests that it may play a role in maintaining and replenishing the gut microbiome. The appendix contains a dense concentration of immune cells, including lymphoid tissue, which serves as a reservoir for beneficial bacteria. In times of gut insult or dysbiosis, the appendix may act as a safe haven for these beneficial bacteria, allowing them to survive and proliferate while the rest of the gut microbiome is disrupted. Furthermore, the appendix may play a role in immune regulation and response to gut insults. Research suggests that the immune cells in the appendix may help modulate the immune response to pathogens and promote tolerance to beneficial bacteria, thereby supporting gut health and resilience. #guthealth #appendicitis

Wait. You can't just say it evolved twice within the same species, which is my species, and leave it at that.

We've always known the appendix had uses. The term "vestigial organ" is a misnomer, not unlike the "tailbone" which is also very important for humans.

The fact that anyone thought it was useless was so ridiculous to me growing up

I’m a firm believer that if you’re born with it more likely than not you need it.

I remember debating this with my teacher in grade school. I couldn’t be convinced that every part of our body’s didn’t serve a purpose even if we don’t know what that purpose is. In your face Mrs. Ericsson

Too bad it has a tendency to spontaneously explode

A friendly reminder that any organ in your body should be kept in your body as long as possible because we just don’t understand the full implications of removal with current medical knowledge 😊

It doesn't mean unless, it means left over from something else.

My personal theory is that it also helps keep us alive when we're younger, especially back when medicine wasn't as good. I have a weird fashion with the appendix.

Omg my partner had his appendix out as a child and as an adult he suddenly developed an incredibly rare autoimmune disease called Benign Recurrent Intrahepatic Choleostasis (BRICS). I wonder if its related? It causee him to suddenly develop jaundice and he was vomiting up every meal! Luckily after a couple months a doctor at the hospital devided to test for BRICS just to rule it out since they still dodnt know what was wrong with him! They gave him some foul tasting white liquid to drink daily and it eventually healed him!

Soo interesting fact; I had mine removed and experienced complete recovery from horrible IBS-D. 15 years of pain, gone overnight because my appendix had a moment and got itself removed

Yet a ruptured appendix can kill you if not treated. Thats messed up 🤣
Almost had mine taken out, but a nurse suggested magnesium nitrate(i think) tasted like lemonade. Solved my issue. Never was my appendix. Dummy doctor outsmarted by a nurse 🤣

I had an appendectomy, and now I feel sick more often because I don't have place for that bacteria
