Thank you. HP Elitebook 840 G2 from 2016.
I had taken an 840 G2 with an unresponsive touchpad, (but the touchpad bars/ button worked), apart but could find nothing wrong. This was a previously used computer with the HDD removed. I had installed an HDD with Win 10 and all worked except the touchpad. The touchpad bars/ button did work.
I had several other 840 G2s so I transferred the HDD with Win 10 to one of them. Alas, an unresponsive touchpad in this one, too. I though it unlikely two in a row would have failed touchpads, so I looked on YouTube for ideas.
The Fn 5 did nothing. Win 10 said the Synoptics 2018 driver was up to date. This driver was removed, the 840 G2 then rebooted, Win 10 searched for a replacement driver, and all is now good.
I kick myself for not having thought of your solution earlier.
