Autumn Days – Primary School Hymn

Words and music by Estelle White (1925-2011)

Taken from the BBC Come and Praise CDs, available here:

Autumn days, when the grass is jewelled
And the silk inside a chestnut shell
Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled
All these things I love so well

Chorus: So I mustn’t forget
No, I mustn’t forget
To say a great big thank you
I mustn’t forget.

Clouds that look like familiar faces
And a winter’s moon with frosted rings
Smell of bacon as I fasten up my laces
And the song the milkman sings.

Whipped-up spray that is rainbow-scattered
And a swallow curving in the sky
Shoes so comfy though they’re worn out and they’re battered
And the taste of apple pie.

Scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling
And a minnow darting down a stream
Picked-up engine that’s been stuttering and stalling
And a win for my home team.

This turns me into a little kid again instantly stood there in assembly belting it out in my jumper and shorts with my pals. What a lovely innocent time in life we all experienced

This is a hymn that i loved singing at Primary school in collective worship. We would sing it sometimes when we went over to church for school services. I am always most nostalgic and always sticking to the past, instead of thinking about growing up. I miss my beloved primary school with all my heart ❤❤❤😪

I sang this 35 years ago from a song book with lots of blue kids faces on. This was my favourite along with “all the animals that i have ever seen”

I remember this song - and others we sang in assembly - would give me very warm feelings inside as a child. You have so much gratitude as a kid, for things like the changes of the seasons, the trees, playing on the school field, getting a new pencil case!

had this stuck in my head about 10 minutes ago, searched it up, realised it was on youtube and immediately went tap-tap-tap. :D

Remember this was sung in Dunvant Juniors in Swansea South Wales often in the 80s - was a step up from the more simple hymns sung in the Infants when you were 7 going on 8! Not sure how jet planes meet in the air to fuel however, but it sounds good! Overall a hymn that makes you appreciate all the things there are to enjoy about life, and I can't listen to this song without hearing our late headmaster Mr Bennet (who took Assembly from the stage in the hall) singing this just as loudly as the children, accompanied by Mr. Cox (unusually also the football coach) on piano and seeing the words projected onto the wall of the stage via an old school overheard projector. Amazing the places, names and faces a 2 minute hymn can bring back just by one listen!

We sang this song in the 1990s at my school in Cheltenham. When and where did everyone else sing it?
