I think the contrast to Zero’s admiration of John is moreso John’s own feelings about himself than John being the object of Zero’s admiration.
Zero glorifies and admires the legendary hitman of Baba Yaga.
John despises what he is and just wanted to get away from that world. The thing ultimately important to him was his wife.
