King Crimson - Sleepless

SLEEPLESS

In the dream I fall into the sleepless sea
With a swell of panic and pain
My veins are aching for the distant reef
In the crush of emotional waves...

Alright, get a hold of yourself
An’ don’t fight it, it’s over your head
It’s alright, the rumble in your ears
It’s alright to feel a little fear
An’ don’t fight it, it’s over your head
It’s alright, you wake up in your bed...

Silhouettes like shivering ancient feelings
They cover my foreign floors and walls
Submarines are lurking in my foggy ceiling
They keep me sleepless at night...

Hey, can you picture the sight
The figures on the beach in the searing night
And the roaring hurt of my silent fight...
Can you pull me out
Of this sleepless night
Can you pull me out?...

To people who are new here: Tony Levin is the bassist.

Still all the years later, Sleepless is such a solid, powerful track. Thanks to King Crimson, Adrian Belew, music talent, and guests.

Sharing this link in memory of my dear friend who died last night. He introduced me to King Crimson four decades ago. Never will forget him driving me to rehearsal for a play we were in together, blasting the stereo, exclaiming, "Frip is god!!"

Fripp's guitar sound is perfect for the 80s. It fits so well.

How can this man be sleepless at night, moving wheels AND a dinosaur?

There's a lot more to this song than just Tony Levin (but to be honest, that was one hell of a bassline he did).

I don't understand why this song didnt make them a hit

Finding this song in 2024 is evidence for my (admittedly cynical) theory that we don't really need new music, there's enough amazing music already to endlessly entertain any one human being.
New music increasingly seems to only serve to give new musicians something 'new' to 'create' (read: regurgitate) and give the music industry 'new' goods to peddle.

This song is fire! I mainly read comments about Tony Levin's playing (rightfully so), but the vocal performance Adrian Belew delivers on the verses are incredible. So haunting and catchy. :-O

This song inspired a generation in Australia.. It was the introduction to RAGE..an Australian music show.. It's a staple over here

One of the best pieces of music ever.

Pure anxiety, poetry and absolute beauty.

Love that Adrian Bellow wailing - very David Byrne. You hear it so much in Elephant Talk and Heartbeat.

Yeah yeah - Tony Levin!! I also like the middle part where the beat changes. The guitars are great. Should have been a big hit. Fucking eighties.

P.S. I have to say that this is one of the best comment sections on any kind of music on yt. Countless comments full of psychological depth and incredible musical analysis.

I was once at a Peter Gabriel's concert. We did pay but my friend knew a guy in the staff so he gave us the backstage tour and I almost stepped into Tony Levin who was about to sit and eat and litterally all I did for minutes was screaming "TONY LEVIN! TONY LEVIN". I wanted to grab him but my friend pulled me away.
So, Tony Levin

Yeah, I know, Levin's bass is on this, but I'm also delighted by the call-and-response Roland guitar synths of Mr. Fripp and Mr. Belew on the long fadeout

Close and pulsating rhythm, an absolute charge. 💪
