They look like they color so smoothly and the colors are so much more vibrant. You should do a comparison video so we can see the difference next to eachother

The hard press crayons were awesome to color with… the new ones made with wax are not as fun to create actual art. The hard press ones were like rich colors that were shaved from actual stones or other things that make up colors, like roots and flowers (then ground up and dried) and pressed to form the crayon. Mixing them had good results too. Today’s crayons when mixing they just make a layer over a layer.

The texture is probably different because back then crayons weren’t “edible” and not safe for young children. Now crayons are safe if a child eats it.

Don't lick them. EVERYTHING had lead back in the day

I’d be worried that green separation was bc of arsenic (sheele’s green) as it was common at one point to put it in everything green to make it more vibrant. It was discontinued at the end of the 19th century so it probably isn’t the case but it’s still close in time.

I noticed that the pigments in modern crayons were much less vibrant years ago. More wax, less pigment. There was a distinct difference since the mid 1970s

I think they're more pigmented than modern crayons which is why they work better. Also I think modern crayons have chemicals to make them less expensive, so modern crayon wax doesn't go on the page as well

Edit: Ok, so people are still getting pissed at this comment. It's obviously good that modern crayons don't have lead or other poisonous stuff in them and I never said that old crayons didn't have lead, it's just annoying that they look slightly less pigmented nowadays.
But before you go and feed your kids some modern-crayon lasagna after finding out they don't have lead, I feel like I have to say despite the fact that they're non toxic nowadays, you shouldn't make a habit of eating them. Crayons do not have nutritional value and would make anyone sick if they ate loads of them, non toxic or not - similar to cardboard or paper. That's all.
Why tf are people getting mad at me for saying you should discourage your kid from eating crayons? Damn lol
