El re dorado was a ceremony, where the king to be would don golden jewelry and be cowered in gold dust and wash himself in the nearby lake, take off the jewerly and let all of it sink to the bottom. And he would be king when he emerged from the lake. People over the years tried to find that gold at the bottom but failed miserably.

In Monster Hunter World is a cave system called Caverns of El Dorado.
It's a giant cave made entirely of gold.
You hunt Kulve Taroth there a Dragon with big beautiful curly horns, a mantle of gold and even gold claws. But she's really rare and doesn't show herself much which is why the siege comes and goes.

Great to know where the inspiration came from. :D

What’s ironic, is that only a few indigenous culture value gold, most valued agricultural resources, such as food, fertile soil, and water, so if El Dorado was real, it probably wouldn’t actually be made of literal gold but probably be a land of agricultural wealth.

Spaniards: “gold will make me the richest man on earth”

Most indigenous people: “you can’t eat shiny rocks”

I remember watching the city’s of gold and at the end there is some informational part in it. It mentioned a seposed king who bathed clad in gold not exactly the same thing.
Also the city’s of gold is definitely something to be sceptical about

Colombian not Mexican! (Specifically Muisca)

"Mexican", id say El Dorado is more of a South American legend, most likely picked up by the Spanish when hearing about the Muisca people from what is now modern day Colombia and their rituals in the Lake Guatavita

Don't know if it was said but Overly Sarcastic Productions did a video on El Dorado and part of it describes a ceremony just like that. Very entertaining video

The mexican city of gold was Cibola, El Dorado was a Colómbia - Perú thing.

It makes more sense that "El Dorado" was short for "El Rey Dorado" or the golden king. By contrast the golden city in Spanish would be "La Ciudad Dorada" or "La Dorada."

I love that the golden zombie land deck in yugioh is based off this myth. That and it combined the elixir of immortality.

iirc from horrible histories and some textbooks i read, they said the City of Gold was an exagerated rumor to give the Spaniards the runaround in the jungle. "Before you pillage us wouldnt you want to raid a city made of gold? Um it goes that way and just take a right and left and up the hill and down a cave and through the leech infested river oh and if you reached the crocodile dens you've gone to far."
They even made rumors of a village consisting of only women and id like to imagine these rumors were the cause of most delays and casualties in their expeditions minus the jungle ofc lol
