I got into a big argument as I had a sentence where my conventional grammar knowledge tore me between "they" as a collective for plural people and "they" as a collective for plural gender
I'll give the example (an artists character profile) and you decide

"Meet Ari. When they were very little they were believed to be the only werewolf who had wings"

Am I the only one who is confused with the placement of they were instead e.g she was? As it sounds like they're talking about a group of werewolf's now and less about Ari.
