I cleaned up an antique Stanley Baily no. 4 and got it into working order for the #katzmoseswalkerfeud

learn how to restore an old rusty hand plane, sharpen by hand, and tune a hand plane to get extremely thin shavings with a smoothing plane.

I was looking through the drawers in my dad's router table and found a brace for sharpening a handplane blade. It reminded me that I had seen Katz-Moses scary sharp video. So I started looking for it again.
I came upon your video while looking back for Jonathan Katz Moses.
I had the time today to bring out my ol 1977 Stanley for a going through.
Enjoyed your vid a lot, and I also am appreciative of your good natured competition with Jonathan.

Main thing though was that I was inspired to break down my planes for a good cleaning, de rusting and sharpening. Thanks!

One step that I recommend after de-rusting is to rub everything down with light oil and wipe of any excess. It will keep the micro pits from immediately turning black or begin rusting again in a garage or workshop.

Paste wax and polish while still in pieces is critical for where I am because of the dampness. Vinegar bath leaves a layer of carbon on the surface as it eats away the iron which is messy to deal with. Doesn’t look like that’s a big problem with this product. Thanks for the video.

Great video but I have a question. How far forward do you set the frog? I'm having issues with getting thin shavings and I have yet to see a video on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It would be nice if you referenced the "ruler trick" to Charlesworth .The man who first came up with it.

Haha, the #katzmoseswalkerfeud battle has a clear winner now! The shavings you took are stunning, can't believe my eyes.
Do you think this smoothing plane would be able to take a good shaving from a random-grain-direction surface? I recently tried using a number 5 jack plane on a cookie slab (3 trunks grown together, very unique piece) and couldn't get a decent pass even though the plane is nicely tuned.
