After some technical problems the first part if finally up.
Here we have Valkyrie Profile (Lenneth), the first game in the somewhat obscure series created by Tri-Ace. The game was intended to be a more straightforward, easy to pick up alternative to Star Ocean 2, to bridge the gap between it and Star Ocean 3.
The story in this game is quite excellent, not because of the writing itself but more because of how it's delivered, or rather how hard you have to look to actually find it. If you play the game normally you will only find suggestions as to what the story may be. In fact the game actively gaslights you in both in the objective descriptions as well as gameplay mechanics to prevent you from finding the true path and becoming strong, which is ABSOLUTELY fitting to the narrative presented. It does make the game harder to play as basically playing it without a guide is literally a waste of your time but on the other hand it's so unique only a bunch of sadistic nerds working at Enix in the 90 could get away with it. I decided to show off the A path in this video but I made sure to point out the stuff that's different as well as including the remaining endings in the 3rd part.
The gameplay is quite an unusual mix of turn based active time combat with style 2D platforming stages as dungeons. The combat part is excellent, the combat mechanic are simple to understand, however the execution can be quite complex when it comes to equipment, skills and the characters you choose to use. When it comes to characters themselves the game pretty much lets you use anybody and there's no real penalty for giving up on someone and swapping out for a new shiny waifu or husbando's who's backstory moved you to tears (or the way they make fingerguns and a lil pow every 5 seconds while bouncing in combat gives you unmeasurable joy). There's only 3 classes (not counting specific weapon users): Warriors, Archers and Sorcerers, each one with a different set of skills they can learn. You don't need to be picky cause with the right combination of equips and items you'll have way more Skill points than you can spend. This brings me to balancing, or seeming lack thereof the difficulty is either a joke or "what!? how !? they can do that!? what do I do??? this is insanity!!!", but once you realize that Valkyrie was put together by a bunch of sadistic nerds who are too talented to be amateurs but too unprofessional for mainstream, you'll start thinking in ways you can completely break the balance in your favor before the lack of balance crushes you instead. That's when you really start having fun and don't feel bad about doing this, when you get to halfway point you're pretty much required to figure out immortality via skills (it's guts+auto item set to union plume).
When it comes to the other part of the gameplay(the platforming stages) whoo boy, it's a bumpy ride. While combat mechanics are seemingly a mess, but in reality are somewhat of a work of chaotic art, the dungeons are not that great and it's not because of lack of effort, but rather too much of it. The stages on hard difficulty (I'll be using those as reference as they are the real meat of the game) are horribly convoluted and confusing to navigate. There usually are puzzles scattered throughout which often aren't introduced very clearly, you only get vague hits as to what did what. Luckily enemies don't respawn so backtracking isn't as painful... or it wouldn't be if if it weren't for how impossible the map is to use. While stages themselves are 2D, the map is displayed in 2, 5 D'ish perspective with all the layers overlapping like pancakes, not only that, the game doesn't make a distiction between when one room ends and the next one starts, if there's 5 rooms next to one another it will be one long rectangle, you can place markers on the map but seeing as the only real way to experience this game is to use an FAQ, just follow instructions there and never look at the map itself. And we haven't even gotten to platforming itself which is... well just not great, Lenneth takes good moment to actually jump after pressing a button and in order to not go insane you need to master the art of crystals. For the most part it's a neat mechanic, you can create crystals on walls and floor which can act as a stepping stone or slight elevation, and can be exploded to send you flying in the opposite direction (this allows you to do a low-long jump needed for crossing certain platforms). Exploding a crystal that's above you will also produce a small crystal sparkle which serves as a temporary platform. All these are quite fun and useful, but then there's building hills out of shattered crystals which is incredibly finnicky and if you want to get all rewards or even finish some stages you need to make them to perfection which can be quite infuriating.
All in all this game is an experience, a bittersweet one but definetly one I'm glad I experienced on the emulator. If you are to play this game, play a modern rerelease or the PlayStation version on emulator, actually playing this game on a real PS1 is very dicey. Not just because the original copies cost an arm and a leg, the game itself was programmed for fast loading (as seen in the longplay), but the coding wizards at Tri-Ace didn't consider how that would be affected by scratches, as a result even a smallest scratch can render a copy unplayable.

"For a gaming industry that tries to shove contemporary society in my escapist entertainment with the force of a charging rhino, I am baffled that my dating experience is summarizied perfectly in a game from the year 2000. Maybe the answer is literally behind our backs!"
