We envied them, admired them, sometimes even adored them, the Elena/Damon couple sold us dreams even though they were toxic. This fictional couple shouldn't even be a reference. Nothing surprising here, the mythical couple of Elena and Damon is the prime example of toxic relationships in fiction. The series, broadcast since 2009, has succeeded in romanticizing perverse love as much as possible. Many people have fallen under the spell of this fragile heart hidden under the air of an insensitive dandy. But let's not forget that from season 1, he tries to seduce Elena while she is in a relationship with her brother, he even tries to manipulate her into kissing him against her will, he abused Caroline in season 1, he killed Lexi, Tyler and many others, not to mention a whole bunch of horrors in between. And, yet, his behavior has always been excused, he has always been forgiven for everything with the simple phrase “it’s Damon, you know how he is”. Oh. So yes, subsequently, the character redeems his behavior, but does that erase all the atrocities he may have committed? No. Obviously, Damon gets away with it without any worries and his actions are not questioned. But their love is so praised by the writers and the public that it has become a model relationship. Enough to completely bury what a healthy relationship is supposed to be !
