No one owns the ocean. The seas and oceans are considered to be a 'global commons', which means that they belong to everyone and no one at the same time. However, countries do have the right to claim 'exclusive economic zones' (EEZs) up to 200 nautical miles from their coastlines.

The US should be doing everything possible to cozy up to Vietnam, despite our past, because they're one of the few countries in the region that held their own against China in a modern military conflict. it is nice to pick the parts of history that suits you, China in the 50s all the way to the present has whiped big parts of its ancient culture and history from its schoolbooks and the public mind, yet it uses this history when it benefits them.

What I now want to know is who at the movie studios thought it reasonable to include the 9-dash line on the maps in the movies? No where else are maritime boundaries ever shown prominently on maps or in art. To me it seems like the move studios were trying to court the Chinese by expending the effort to include the 9-dash line.

I just don’t get how they really think they can claim that whole thing. That’s just the government being envious of other countries around the world. They feel like they are entitled to it. Just like with Taiwan even though the government never governed the people of Taiwan.

The Chinese Century will never happen. China has already failed with its current overstated and collapsing population, massive unemployment, reproductive male/female imbalance and resulting social unrest, collapsing housing and real estate market, failing manufacturing, and degrading tofu infrastructure (including the Three Gorges Dam). The Chinese Economic Miracle resulted from support and access offered from developed nations, and that benefit was squandered by the CCCP and lost. These events, and not the 9-dash Line, will be the precursor of future Chinese wars.

Nearly every nation in the world has been humiliated once or twice or even more in their history, many even to a much worse degree.

Also, China humiliated itself more than the west did, with the cultural Revolution, great leap forward and the likes.
