Nah it is not that simple. You must tone map a 32bit image into a 16bit or 8bit/

This should not even be a question. This is more of Photoshop crap. The tutorial is also inaccurate. It doesn't not show how to change from 32 to 8. Doing so invoked a complete conversion of the images gamma and quality and a dialog to readjust the now crappy image. This is more of adobes upgrade money gleaning upgrades. I feel sorry for Substance Painter. This use to be simple as pie.

fail. thats not all it is. from 32 bits there is a color shift that needs to be dealt with. try again.

You showed how to save a 16 to 8 bit image... the problem is (like in the question) when you want to convert from 32bit man...

If anyone want to save 8bit as bmp format. You should go in Mode > and choose Indexed color. Because if this option will be in RGB color, you wont be able to save 8 bit. I had messing with this so much :(

Yea this tutorial is plain wrong. Maybe you showed people how to save images as jpegs.. Great. But your title says how to convert an image to 16 or 8 bit, which is what I googled, and your tutorial doesn't do that. You show how to convert to 8 or 16 bit PER channel, which gives you a 24 bit or 48 bit image.. So ya may wanna correct your title or just delete the faulty tutorial.

As I wanted to convert an image down to an actual 24/16 bit file for technical reasons, and as far as I can tell photoshop plain cannot do it. Saving it to png-24 still results in a 32bit image. 8 bit works but there is no way to get 16 or 24 that i can tell. May require a plugin.

Still the options won't show for me after doing this.

I tried that simple method but the MODE menu has 16 bit and 32 bit grayed out.

Which editor do you use to edit pictures?

Thank you, relatively short and right to the point. Hate having to skim through a 10m long video to find a process that literally takes >5s.
