Timket is the greatest festival of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church .It is incomparably the grandest, and the most spectacular celebration commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist. This colorful ceremony takes place on January 18thand 19th (Tir 10 and 11 E.C) throughout the country. Although the feast is basically a two-day celebration, owing to the coincidence of the monthly feast of St. Michael, on January 20, which is the archangel and the most respected angel in Ethiopia, Timqet is known as the three-day festival.
The historical origin of the festival of Timket and its celebration with the accompaniment of the tabots allegedly goes back to the time of King Gebre Mesqel in the 6th Century A.D. The Church’s customary practice of placing tabots in baptismal places is believed to be was started in the time of King Lalibela.
