I Question: Does lung protective mechanical ventilation during surgery improve outcomes?
I Answer: Prof. Paolo Pelosi, Editorial Board Member, ICU Management, and Head of the Speciality School in Anaesthesiology - Universita' degli Studi di Genoa, Italy

----------------------------

The latest study showed that the post-operative mortality is higher than expected. The most common complication after surgery is pulmonary complication. The new study clearly showed the protecting mechanical ventilation with low tidal volume during surgery may improve outcome in the post-operative period. So, I believe that we should apply a ventilation with low tidal volume during surgery in high-risk patients.
