Luke is a relatable character on a life journey and spiritual journey who starts out as a “irritating sidekick“ and eventually becomes a master despite his parentage. Obi Wan and Yoda saw the spirit of good in Luke and guided him to grow into the role of the hero (good character)

Harrison was brought in to read with other prosecutive actors. They told Harrison he was just there to help with the casting. He was not being considered. Harrison wasn't happy and was a bit arrogant in the readings because he knew he wasn't on their radar. Through his being peed off, they found the person they were looking for. Kool story.

A lot of concepts from those early drafts would later be used in the old Expanded Universe and the prequels as well.

Son of Suns chosen one prophecy
The Jedi-Bendu
The Sith Knights
Padawans
Midi-chlorians
Crystals
Shatterpoint (unnamed of course)
Had Abbadan (Coruscant)

And even character names like Mace Windu and Ki-Adi-Mundi were in those old drafts. Obviously everything changed around as time went on (no good writer uses their first draft as the final product), but many ideas of the George Lucas saga and the old EU were derived from George’s original ideas. Hell Darth Vader was like four separate characters combined into one (Annikin Starkiller, Darth Vader, Kane Starkiller, Lord Valorum)

The interesting thing to me is as much as I love Mark hamill, he did sort of play a New Hope like "the annoying sidekick" up until the last 5 minutes of the movie
