The leaf veins are elaborate networks of vascular tissues.
.
The vascular tissues are the “piping system” of the plant. The Xylem and the Phloem are two different types of pipes that transport different materials.
.
Ferns first appeared on Earth around 360 million years ago. Having vascular tissues made ferns incredibly evolutionarily successful. The vascular tissue allowed plants to grow vertically (become tall!) and this made ferns and other vascular plants outcompete plants that didn’t have vascular tissues such as mosses…
.
Thanks to the amazing adaptation of having vascular tissues, during the Carboniferous period, ferns would become huge (giant trees in some cases) and very abundant.
.
There are two types of vascular tissues:
1) Xylem, which carries water and minerals from the soil to the leaves.
2) Phloem, which distributes nutrients from the leaves to the rest of the plant (or from wherever the nutrients may be stored to the rest of the plant).
