"The Ghetto" - Donny Hathaway (1969)
This nice groove came under the attention of a new audience in 2011 as it was used in the moving French film "Intouchables" (by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano) in the cover version by George Benson (2000). In the original version it's tenor saxophonist King Curtis (who was also an excellent guitar player) who played the guitar. Donny Hathaway played the organ.
Close your eyes, listen to the organ (especially from 2'30" on) and think of "Riders On The Storm" by The Doors, which was made more than one year later than "The Ghetto"... ;-)

55 years later and nothing has changed, we still have Ghettos across America.

The word Ghetto is the state of mindset in which some people think because you reside in a poor class of residency it, s called the Ghetto . No. You, re Rich in Spirit to keep on keeping on no matter what Life throws at you.

In the late 60s when this hit came out we would be at the club and jump to our feet when this song was played. There was a certain dance that went along with it that everyone was dancing at the time.❤

Peace All:

Early college days... The War, Protests, Sit-ins, Sit Outs, Street Fairs, pacing through Harlem Streets, The Barrio, Liberation Movements, Teach-Ins, Bodegas, Cultural Awareness, Black is Beautiful, Afros, The Village Gate Live, Power to the People, Seize the Time, Little Ghetto Boy, What's Going' On.... Yes
... "This is the Ghetto"!

The sound of the memories of that sound are definitely real...
How well we remember the message in the music... And the rhythm goes on...

Don't also forget that Mak King 'over used' this Hyptnotical Bass Line on stage (you can hear it on Level 42 Album 'physical presence' can't remember on wich tune ?) This is how I got to know this super guy 'Donny' gone too early.... (and his daughter voice....) around 1985. Thank you for this sharing and thanks to Mark King (solo Album 'influences' 👌)

Organ? This is a typical Fender Rhodes nasty electric keyboard sound. Something musicians nowadays have forgotten... .
