Indian Air Force to Boost AWACS Fleet |
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is facing a critical challenge in its AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) capabilities, with a significant gap compared to China and Pakistan. While the IAF operates only six AWACS, China boasts a fleet of over 40, and even Pakistan, with a weaker economy, has 10 to 12 such aircraft. In modern military aviation, these “eyes in the sky” are essential for defence strategy, providing advanced surveillance, battlefield coordination, and air dominance.

To counter this shortfall, India is taking decisive steps. The Indian Air Force AWACS program is set to expand with the induction of six new Netra Mk2 systems, featuring advanced DRDO-developed gallium nitride-based radars for superior detection and tracking. These will be mounted on HAL-modified Airbus A321 aircraft, significantly improving operational capability. Additionally, the IAF has issued an RFI for six more advanced AWACS based on the Airbus A330 platform, extending surveillance range to 400 km.
