In order to put this clip together, I thought to myself "If I were to be learning Thai from scratch again, what advice would I give myself?" -

I tried to make it applicable to anyone learning Thai - from someone just wanting to impress the wait staff at the local Thai restaurant, to expats and even diplomats who will be posted in Thailand and need Thai to effectively communicate.

Stuart be like "are you learning Thai to hook up with Thai women?". Half the comment section "we just want to undertand Thai gay series. Thank you very much". Behold the power of BL

In the beginning, I would simply try to learn 3 new words a day, and review words from the previous days. This is an extremely lazy way to learn. It takes only about 20 minutes a day. Over the course of a year, it can add up to over 1, 000 words.

Were there times I got bored or felt burned out? Yes, many times. If you feel that way, then take a break for a day or two. I've taken breaks as long as a month before. Come back your study routine when you feel ready again.

Now I've been learning for over 4 years. I'm still not yet at Stuart's level of fluency, but I can read and have conversations with anyone in Thai. The point is, even if you're lazy like me, stick with it for the long term and you'll eventually have success.

I want to learn Thai so I can watch my BL shows without having to solely rely on English subtitles and so I can watch interviews and all the fun things the actors do and know what they are saying.

I completely agree that it's worth the extra time learning to read Thai. I absolutely hate the Romanization (pinyin for those learning Chinese) of Thai. It had always thrown me off 😫 Once I learned to read it with the Thai alphabet, learning to speak became much easier! So much easier!

After living in Thailand for about 8 years and messing around with language courses based on our own alphabet, I discovered a computer based resource, High Speed Thai, in 2013. That re-set the whole thing, starting with only working with Thai alphabet. It took a bit of effort but very quickly the results were really satisfying and empowering. Now back in the UK the last 7 years, any time I go back to Thailand I spend the month before brushing up on that old course and it all comes flooding back. I love it.

I have been learning for years with varying success but Stu Ray Jay's explanation of tones is the simplest, easiest way to learn.

I'm Thai and I'm now learning English and Spanish. I found his video super inspirational and handy. Thanks for the practical pieces of advice, I would apply them to learn both languages.
P.S. I can tell that his Thai is phenomenal!

I really wish I knew how I learnt English. Cause now I use it more than my mother language. I never really wrote down anything to learn English but I remember watching videos and stuff and it just came to me. I hope it can happen again with Thai. So far I know a few words and sentences but still gotta work on it a lot. And this video actually made me feel motivated and excited that I can learn it and be fluent, thank you.
