A man is dead after drowning in a reservoir in Tempe, Arizona. Initially, police responded to reports of the man and his wife arguing. The officers made small talk with the couple as they checked to see if either had outstanding arrest warrants. Suddenly, the man climbed over a railing and perched himself over the reservoir. The officers warned him not to try to swim in it, but he ignored them. Soon, the man was begging for help.

As a former lifeguard, I will say that jumping in to save someone can go south very fast. If you jump in without proper traing, you can find yourself in a lot of trouble.

This world is BACKWARDS!
He suffered the consequences for his actions!!
It’s NOT the police officer fault .
People need to be held accountable for their actions!! The World says Blame everyone else.

I'm a lifeguard, Red Cross certified, and we're taught that saving drowning victims is a challenging task. You can't expect cops with gear and no water rescue equipment to do the same.

He’s a police officer not a lifeguard. It is extremely dangerous to try to rescue a drowning person…I would have done the same thing to be honest.

Nobody forced him to jump in the water. He's a grown man. The cops were telling him not to do it. Trying to rescue an adult is not as easy as some think.

Saving a drowning victim is incredibly dangerous… tbh I wouldn’t jump in to save him either, if the wife was so concerned why didn’t she jump in?

I would not have went in to save him. I used to be a police officer but I can’t swim to save myself. This is the dudes own fault 💯

Look how much equipment the officer is wearing. It's impossible to just jump in water and rescue someone not to mention the man could panic and bring them both under. Imagine if the man just refused to get in the water this would have never happened.

I was WSQ trained in the Marine Corps. Trying to rescue a person who is in a panicked state is not easy, in fact it’s down right dangerous, especially when it involves a grown man. Unless these officers had water rescue training they were not prepared to get into that lake and attempt a rescue.

The cop warned him not to go in.. at some point we have to be held accountable for our own actions. It's horrible that he drowned but he put himself in harms way without regard and wanted others to do the same.

If you've never rescued anyone drowning. You've never understood the amount of struggle and training needed. A panicking person will drown you with them. The man did this to himself. RIP.

I can’t believe Inside Edition is trying to make us believe that this is the cop’s fault. 🤦‍♂️

As much as this pains me to say, it’s not the cops’ fault

I’m sorry but you can’t blame the cops for every situation. In spite of their warnings, the man jumped in the water to evade them. It’s not like they pushed him in.

Under investigation? As much as it is tragic, the officers did nothing wrong.

I had a good friend who jumped into a quarry that had a current after a storm. He immediately started struggling and then went under. His brother without hesitation jumped in immediately attempting to save him. Unfortunately he also went under too. Both drowned. Never underestimate the danger water can give you

As an emergency responder the first thing they teach you is protect yourself first. Don't enter a situation you're not trained or equipped for. You're going to be no help to anyone if you get hurt or killed and will complicate the situation more. If these cops jump into that water and get into trouble, now there's three people needing rescue instead of one. Wait for the guys with the proper gear.

A man that big isn’t easy to rescue.

He absolutely did this to himself

We weren’t shown the entire video but it seems like the guy’s wife did even less than the police. She didn’t even try to dissuade her husband, let alone attempt to save him.

That was his fault, not the police officers…⚠️WARNING: IF YOU’RE NOT A GOOD SWIMMER, DO NOT GET IN THE WATER!!!
