In 1986, Justice Antonin Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan. He filled the vacancy created by the elevation of Justice William H. Rehnquist to chief justice. Although ideological opposites, Justices Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were close friends. They bonded over a love of opera. Justice Scalia was as prolific in life as he was on the bench. He had nine children and thirty-five grandchildren.
