I’d had knee surgery back in March. I had been taking a statin. I had severe swelling. Nothing worked to relieve me. Not even Tylenol, muscle rubs and messages. A few days ago, I stopped taking the statin and lo and behold I am not swelling and in pain. I knew it. I’m watching what I eat and switched over to eating vegetables and bitter foods. This is of my own doing. I’m tired of being sick.

I had so much pain I had unnecessary surgery! Pain showed up in my shoulder ON ONLY ONE SIDE! Since most pain from statins usually exhibits on both sides of your body...no doctor thought it was the statins. Cried myself to sleep for 6 months then got addicted to opioids. Luckily my chlorestoral got worse and doctor doubled my statin. Pain so bad for two minutes months that I realized it was the statin. I decided to stop the statin completely. Three days later, after two years of pain, all pain stopped. Advice- 1) no matter what the doctors suggest, take half the dose or less for a while to gauge side effects. 2) When doctors do not know something, they blame you, not their lack of knowledge 3) You must be your own advocate regardless of how you are treated by docs and nurses. Fight for yourself regardless of what you are told. Hope this helps you.

I was on Statins tablets and it crippled me for years. I was going through a tougher lifestyle eg confided into a wheelchair, aches and terrible pain the whole body, could not manage to feed myself, till I went for pre assessment, the Consultant told me to stop Statins for 4 weeks otherwise there will be complications during the operation. Second week when stop the treatment I could use my hands by feeding myself, learning to walk with a Zimmer flame the pain decreased. After the operation I decided not to take. I suffered for many years without knowing the cause stress depression and anxiety the medication put me through. Thanks Dr for the helpful information 👍 God bless you 🙏

Doctor, you are super. Your slow n clear talk will benefit millions. I am 80 n a stroke patient. My doctor prescribed Atorvastaatin 20 mg. After taking it for a year I found body pains n shortage of bile. As a pharmacist I was able to identify the source as the statin. I stopped using n my body aches disappeared. In about a year bile normalised. And today I am hundred percent better. No statins for me.🙏🙏🙏

I have been on astorvastatin for years for borderline cholesterol.
I was having aches and pains along with stiffness. I had been considering reducing or stopping the drug. Then my neighbor also on astorvastatin developed muscle weakness where she could hardly walk and fell backwards down her stairs while headed to bead at night.
She was diagnosed with necrotizing meyosititus (sp). Now she receives an IV for four hours two consecutive days once a month for the last six months. The dr. said was caused by the statin.
I subsequently talked with my GP and stopped my statin drug.
BTW i am 72 and recently had a physical including echocardiogram and cardio stress test. Passed all with no narrowing of any blood vessels.

I know people who at least, after taking Lipitor for 3 weeks were unable to walk and eventually, in a wheelchair for awhile, and afterwards paralyzed. Just today I talked to a friend who after taking Lipitor for 30 days! Is in a wheelchair! That is a crime that should be stopped and treat people through better habits in life style. Thank you doctor. Keep insisting in better food choices

I was prescribed statins at 27 for my slightly high cholesterol. I literally couldn’t walk from them. I told my doctor I will never take them again and he said I will have a heart attack or stroke. It’s been 2 years and even after a pregnancy which increased my cholesterol even more I haven’t had any heart problems. 😂

Muscle pain is such a common complaint from many people on a statin - you gave a very clear explanation - thank you!

This is great info. I switched from Atorvastatin to Rosuvastatin, recently, because of muscle pain. I hate taking these things. I feel like crap all the time. After working out at the gym, nothing feels good or normal. I am thinking about just quitting. My Mother lived to be 95 and never took anything.

I have been taking statins for many many years and my legs felt like I was carrying around two tree trunks. Read up on them and stopped taking them three months ago and I can walk further, get out of the chair better and no pain, also it’s like walking on lighter branches now. Thank you.

God bless you for informing people of these risks. Doctors prescribe these medications without telling the side effects. I am experiencing aches and weakness in my calves. I've been off of crestor for about 45 days now but the damage had already been done. I am 63 years old caregiver for my mother who's 91 and I really struggle some days. But again God bless you Dr. John🙏🏽

I am on lowest dose of Rosuvastatin but have been have arm pain, leg /knee pain and waking at night several times with leh/foot cramps. I took meds every second day and side effects continued. I have stopped meds altogether x 2 weeks and already feel better. I attend exercise classes 3x week and the pain used to prevent completing a range of exercises. I am once again building up aerobic and strengthening exercises minus pain. Thank you. Cheers
