Power, Politics and Pragmatism: The British National Grid

Back in the 1920s, electricity was generated by hundreds of small companies in towns and cities across the country. They were all different and mostly incompatible: London alone had 24 voltages and 10 frequencies. How did we get from there to the billion-pound tunnel projects of today?

I like how these videos are made with just him walking alone and talking in weird-ass places so it seems like he's basically a guy who can access every secure location in the world on its own without any permit or supervision from anyone.

I like how Tom makes videos about things I didn't think I would find interesting, but I always do.

I really love when you plug other interesting youtubers. Gives me something cool to watch rather than work on my approaching deadlines.

And that, is something, you might not have known.

Good ol' times when Tom actually said this at the end of his videos...

The National Gridiron sounds more like a football team.

I actually work for a power distributor in the UK and this is the first I've heard of this so it's interesting for myself! Power distributors work on everything bellow 132kv so these are much larger than we work on ourselves but yeah! Really loved this :)

I did wonder how central London had virtually no power lines above ground! Also, loving the teeny little 9kg dry powder extinguisher in that shot, if 400kv starts a fire down there you'd struggle to get anywhere near it, let alone put it out! That said, it is for little fires which could melt the 400kv cables, but still a funny thought!

"well we have already tried it and it worked AND we have proof." is one of the coolest things to be able to say to your boss.

I wonder how often digging projects in old cities like London discover ancient stuff long buried and forgotten.

This is a good one. But honestly, they are all good. Thanks, Tom and the guys in the background who don't get enough credit. You really do a service to the world.

This is an *amazing* example of how ideology and politics affects economic development.

National Grid is also the company that bought out KeySpan and is now the local natural gas utility company in NYC.

Why is the tunnel so big? Will they fill it up with cables eventually?
