I always assumed when Arthur mentioned the wolves devouring a friend to Mason he was referring to John.

Arthur is talking about John in the mission with Albert Mason, not Hamish. These missions are very early in game while Hamish is at the very end of the story, and no matter when you do them, before or after Hamish, this line of dialogue is there anyway.

The pile of shit at the abattoir is probably BECAUSE it's abandoned. People will often dump at abandoned sites.

The pile outside of the abandoned meat plant is steaming because as things turn into compost, they start to become warmer and the heat can be visible. Such an incredible game!

Arthur isn't talking about Hamish he's talking about john. I just did this mission and I haven't done any of the Hamish yet and he still said the same line of dialogue.

In the mason mission, if you go as jhon instead, you can learn that arthur was talking about saving john, when john says "a friend of mine saved my life from wolves"
