The Globe’s Mark MacKinnon was in Kherson this weekend while residents celebrated Ukraine regaining control of the city from Russia’s invading forces. They had been under Russian occupation since the beginning of March, just days into the war, and life has been difficult.

Mark tells us about what he has been hearing from people and what this latest loss for Russia means for the broader conflict.

It means the Russians are waiting for the ground to freeze so it will support their armored vehicles. In the meantime, they will keep knocking out the electricity.

You can never win a war with someone you can't say no to and you can't say no to Russian oil and your winter Ukraine, it's sad your people have to suffer because your leaders are so prepared to throw u under a tank.

And mind you Excaliber rounds were not given to Ukraine because they're insanely expensive.

So many Russian trolls. Russia lost Kherson then ran away. Just like Kyiv, Kharkiv and Mykolaiv. Poor Russian trolls are having trouble coping with reality but for some reason have taken over comments on Canadian news videos. Russian trolling makes about as much sense as Russian war strategy.

Why the f would there be obvious repercussions to civilians for taking jobs? What kind of justification for executions and punishment is there for civilians trying to survive irregardless of who is occupying the city, wtf? How can you say that with no sense of moral guilt?

Why would Russia admit defeat by pulling out? I think this is just the beginning.

Lol, anyone that thinks Ukraine is going to ‘win’ this conflict is a fool at best.

It means the Russian army is pulling back to unleash something akin to the rush to take Berlin in three weeks.

I'd love to hear the news about the liberation of Quebec and the fight of Quebec patriots for freedom. I'd support any of the Aboriginal Warriors movements in fight for freedom and liberation of the occupied territories

absolutely nothing, russia is waiting for the ground to freeze, once winter is installed there, it will be much more violent, that is not my opinion but the one of some major veteran in the USA
the ukrainian army is lost, most of the soldier there are foreigners and mercenaries, so it is a wait and see situation and i hope ukrainian people will be evacuated before the ground freeze in ukraine, people dont have to pay the price for the elites wargames

Thanks to "Fish&Hunt" for these comments I could not do better.
Russian leadership & military achievements so far during the war in Ukraine.

*Into the 9th month of a 3 day 'special military operation'.
*Failed to take Kyiv.
*Failed to remove Ukrainian leadership.
*Changed their strategic plan multiple times.
*Dismissed 4 Generals since the start of the war.
*Still have not gained air-superiority despite having a supposedly far superior airforce.
*A number of ships either sunk or damaged including the flag-ship of the Black Sea Fleet and then its replacement to a country with basically no navy.
*Took, but could not hold, the tiny Snake Island.
*Significantly boosted NATO membership and strength.
*Ensured Ukraine's eventual membership of the EU and, longer term, most likely also NATO.
*Suffered massive troop and equipment losses.
*Lost more ground in 1 month then what was taken in 5 months.
*Lost Kherson.
*Became the biggest arms supplier to Ukraine from abandoned and captured hardware.
*Committed multiple war crimes.
*Had to try to mobilise 300, 000 extra troops at month 7 for the 3 day 'special military operation'.
*Got so desperate decided to declare martial law.
*Destroyed their economy.
*Turned their biggest trading partners against them.
*Couldn't even defend the most defended bridge in the world.
*Regular displays of poor fire safety and smoking in non designated areas.
*Resorted to nuclear threats against a non-nuclear nation.
*Targeted civilians because their army is getting smashed by the Ukrainian army.
*Tactically and logistically incompetent.
*Have a poor understanding of combined-arms warfare.
*Fast running out of precision strike capability and have limited ability to build more without western supplied parts.
*Flushed their future down the toilet that was most likely stollen from Ukraine along with a washing machine.
*While attempting to 'de-nazify' Ukraine Russia scored an own-goal⚽and nazified themselves.
