When Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), who was formerly a Christian, came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with the intention of understanding Islam, he asked several questions in order to remove his doubts. One of these was: “This verse accuses us of taking our scholars and monks as our lords. What is its real meaning. For we do not take them as our lords.”

As a reply to this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) put him a counter question: “Is it not a fact that you accept as unlawful what they declare to be unlawful, and lawful what they declare to be lawful?” Adi confessed, “Yes, it is so.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “This amounts to making them your lords.”

the subtitles really helped. thanks for explaining this. it open my eyes about christianity. there was no prophet ever talk about trinity then out of nowhere there’s trinity in christianity and they make it as a way to escape what the old testament teach them

The same happened to every prophet when he died. People either revert to their old religion and/or abandon his law to the point that his message is subverted. When the messenger pbuh died, the first Khalifa, Abu Bakr Al-Sidiq came to his bed and checked his body and the rest of the companions were outside troubled even Omar bin Al-Khattab. He went outside and said firmly:”He who worshipped Mohammad, Mohammad has died and he who worships Allah, Allah lives and never dies”. The he recited the two aya: “إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ ٣٠
39:30. You will die, and they [too] will die.” and “وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ ٱلرُّسُلُ ۚ أَفَإِين مَّاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَٰبِكُمْ ۚ وَمَن يَنقَلِبْ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَن يَضُرَّ ٱللَّهَ شَيْـًٔا ۗ وَسَيَجْزِى ٱللَّهُ ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ ١٤٤
3:144. Muhammad is but an messenger ; [other] messengers have passed before him. If he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? Anyone who turns back on his heels, will not harm Allah in the least, and soon Allah will reward the grateful.

That was not enough though and soon tribes started to revert and a person named Musailama (the Liar) claimed prophethood and many tribes wanted to stopped paying Zakat which is an obligation of Sharia (separate from tax or charity). The very existence of the message was at stake so Abu Bakr acted swiftly and the Ridda wars started.

The basic difference between Sunni muslims and the rest of sects/religions that came out of Islam (Druz, Ismaili, Ahmadi, Bahaa, ..) is that they disregard part of Islam’s law or has a figure or clergy which Islam doesn’t have.
