I'm not a sawyer but since you're alone, it seems that it would be easier to flop it down (forward) and slide it back.

3rd generation sawyer here. This is a more primitive version of the mill we used for twenty years.
I spent the whole video cringing at how dangerous everything here is. I can’t believe he’s doing any of this!
Do not try this at home.
