This is exactly why I love Charli XCX's lyrics. A lot of lyricists couch the true meaning of their lyrics behind metaphors and symbolism. And there's nothing wrong with that, a lot of amazing songs have lyrics like that. But there's something special about a song that just tells you exactly what it means.

Having just entered my late 20s, this is extremely accurate. When you hit around mid-late twenties and you start seeing all your peers getting married and having kids you do start questioning whats wrong with you. I know I’m young, but I also feel so old at times to be at the current place Im in. I know im nowhere near being in a relationship, so it just makes you wonder how things will end up.

I personally don't interpret this song as Charli declaring she definitely wants to become a mother. To me, it feels more like a nuanced self-inquiry about whether or not she wants to have kids. The messaging that having kids is something you MUST do and that it's the epitome of existential fulfillment is pervasive -- it's impossible for women and AFABs to not internalize it on some level. The repetition of "that I might run out of time" feels like a reflection of that, since we're often told "you'll run out of time" on your "biological clock". This song feels like Charli reckoning with her internalized beliefs and holding them up to her own life as she tries to parse her true feelings about the prospect of motherhood. The lyrics are full of questions that represent both paths ("Would it make me miss all my freedom?" and "Would it give my life a new purpose?"). She really captured that ambivalence in a way I haven't encountered in a song before. As others have said, the vulnerability here is palpable.
