An Architect's Own Home Was Designed & Built to Passive House Principles

The principles of Passive House are fairly simple but make a huge impact, and it's to make sure the home is airtight, plenty of insulation, high-performing windows, and eliminates thermal bridging. Melbourne architect, Daniel Wolkenberg of Polystudio, ensured his home followed these principles, as well as having low-maintenance external materials, good orientation, and a drought-tolerant native/edible landscape.

His own home has also been designed to suit his family, and how it may adapt as the family grows. The ground floor is open and can accommodate visitors and evening homework, while upstairs are the more private space, a second living room, and dedicated study.

Just for clarification, we do not call this a Passive House, rather it's a home that has been built to Passive House principles, as it has not been through the certification process.

Great work Daniel! I am happy to see your project finally realised and such a positive outcome.
It was a pleasure working together with you a couple of years back, and I hope your practice is running strong and healthy today.

While I don't mind the modern design , at 2.22, the contrast in style with the other historical houses in the street is quite visually shocking and not very sensitive !I personally would have liked to see an attempt to create a more sympathetic street facade with at the very least, a fusion of the old with the new....However standing alone it's a great design !

I look at that house and think, you should've hired an architect. 🙂

Nice home but what is that backsplash? Each to their own.

What is the dark wood panel material exactly on kitchen walls/cabinet-doors? Is it stained birch plywood?

Great content but the background noise of the monologue is really distracting😢

The exterior needs more textures and materials.

There's no character. What character?

Pretty safe here. Not much to brag about. Looks like innovation and courage would have enlivened the project inside and out. White exterior disappears against neighbors and background. Passive indeed.
