If originally it takes one unit of time to walk along each path, doing the product of two paths means to double the speed when traveling along each of them so the new path (the product) is also a one unit of time travel, and hence we can call it a path. It is not associative because doing the product of the paths A and B and then doing the product of it with C would mean the trip along paths A and B would take a quarter of a unit of time each while the trip along path C would take a half, and obviously there is no symmetry
