I was born 1950. I was about 5 yrs old. I can still vividly remember singing this song while dancing across our kitchen with my mom. We would belt it out while dancing feverishly across all 15 feet of our tiny kitchen. It is one of my few favorite memories with my now long lost mom. So glad I found this site. Such good memories. means so much to me as I have grandfather and 2 uncle's in army, (WW1, WW2), Dad in navy, (Korea), brother and uncle in air force, (viet nam), uncle, brother, (viet nam) and now grandson all in Marines (stateside). I have. A rich military heritage for this song as I am so proud of EVERY one of them.. thank you for this site.

This song was sung with great gusto by my dear old mom sadly no longer with us. I hear it, close my eyes and I'm a child again. Wonderful nostalgia.

The most beautiful female voice the UK has ever produced. Vera Lyn was better known but this woman had far the better voice. Not a nd actress neither, she and Arthur As key are hilarious.

Hello Tony,
I am a music teacher of 30 years and a pianoist and organist for 60 years I love all kinds of music I play them and I teach and i love this song that Anne sang i suppose she may be like Vera Lynne but Vera's songs were on the slow, romantic side but Anne Shelton's songs were on the marchy and livley style i wanted to do music concerts in our large Cathedrals for soldiers who lost limbs but like you said why did nobody took up the song nobody would help me to put on a music concert.

You can hear A&R man Joe Meek (Then working for Decca) standing behind Anne with a tray full of gravel to get the marching sound!
